@X083@X05.@X0812@X03 MERCURY FULMINATE
@X08 Mercury fulminate is perhaps one of the oldest known initiating
compounds@X05.@X08 It can be detonated by either heat or shock@X05,@X08 which would make it
of infinite value to a terrorist@X05.@X08 Even the action of dropping a crystal of
the fulminate causes it to explode@X05.@X08 A person making this material would
probably use the following procedure@X05:@X08
MATERIALS EQUIPMENT
@X05 _________ _________
@X08 mercury @X05(@X085 g@X05)@X08 glass stirring rod
concentrated nitric 100 ml beaker @X05(@X082@X05)@X08
acid @X05(@X0835 ml@X05)@X08 adjustable heat
ethyl alcohol @X05(@X0830 ml@X05)@X08 source
distilled water blue litmus paper
funnel and filter paper
1@X05)@X08 In one beaker@X05,@X08 mix 5 g of mercury with 35 ml of concentrated nitric acid@X05,@X08
using the glass rod@X05.@X08
2@X05)@X08 Slowly heat the mixture until the mercury is dissolved@X05,@X08 which is when the
solution turns green and boils@X05.@X08
3@X05)@X08 Place 30 ml of ethyl alcohol into the second beaker@X05,@X08 and slowly and carefully
add all of the contents of the first beaker to it@X05.@X08 Red and@X05/@X08or brown fumes
should appear@X05.@X08 These fumes are toxic and flammable@X05.@X08
4@X05)@X08 After thirty to forty minutes@X05,@X08 the fumes should turn white@X05,@X08 indicating that
the reaction is near completion@X05.@X08 After ten more minutes@X05,@X08 add 30 ml of the
distilled water to the solution@X05.@X08
5@X05)@X08 Carefully filter out the crystals of mercury fulminate from the liquid
solution@X05.@X08 Dispose of the solution in a safe place@X05,@X08 as it is corrosive
and toxic@X05.@X08
6@X05)@X08 Wash the crystals several times in distilled water to remove as much excess
acid as possible@X05.@X08 Test the crystals with the litmus paper until they are
neutral@X05.@X08 This will be when the litmus paper stays blue when it touches the
wet crystals
7@X05)@X08 Allow the crystals to dry@X05,@X08 and store them in a safe place@X05,@X08 far away from
any explosive or flammable material@X05.@X08
This procedure can also be done by volume@X05,@X08 if the available mercury
cannot be weighed@X05.@X08 Simply use 10 volumes of nitric acid and 10 volumes of
ethanol to every one volume of mercury@X05.@X08
